On June 11th the "Forschungsnetzwerk Trauma-Biomechanik" was initiated with a symposium at the University of Applied Sciences Regensburg. Besides PDB the founding members are: the Department for Trauma Surgery of the University Hospital Regensburg (Abteilung Unfallchirurgie der Universität Regensburg), the Department for Mechanical Engineering of the University of Applied Sciences Regensburg (Fakultät Maschinenbau der Hochschule Regensburg), the Federal Highway Research Institute (Bundesanstalt für Straßenwesen, BASt) and the Institute for Legal Medicine of LMU Munich (Institut für Rechtsmedizin der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München).

In-depth knowledge about injury mechanisms gained by biomechanical research is the basis of reducing the injury risk of car occupants and road users. The research network, which is open for further partners, will set up an information platform, identify important research topics and facilitate the transfer of knowledge across specialist areas.

The analysis of injury mechanisms, the definition of biomechanical tolerance limits, the assessment of injury risks and the development of methods belong to the fundamental subject matter of the research network. These fundamental topics comprise more specific scientific questions and tasks like the numerical simulation of the human body. The "Forschungsnetzwerk Trauma-Biomechanik" will combine different specialist areas to strengthen the existing competence in computation and analysis of injury incidents.
